Abu Arish — Heritage & Souq
Hamdah Fort
A substantial Ottoman-era fortress in Abu Arish — thick mud-brick and stone walls, corner watchtowers, and an enclosed courtyard. Built during the period of Ottoman control of the Tihama coast and Yemen in the 16th–17th centuries. One of the most significant Ottoman heritage sites in southern Saudi Arabia.
Managed by Saudi Heritage Commission.
Historic Trading Town Souq
Abu Arish was historically one of the most important market towns of the southern Hejaz — positioned on trade routes between the Tihama coast, the Asir mountains, and Yemen. The traditional covered arcade market still operates and reflects this heritage in its goods — local honey, spices, woven baskets, and regional crafts.
Busiest: Thursday–Saturday mornings.
Jazan Region Honey
Jazan Region produces some of Saudi Arabia's most prized honey — Sidr (lote tree), Samur, and Talh varieties from the Tihama plain and Asir foothills. Abu Arish market is one of the best places to buy authentic local honey directly from producers. The honey is raw, unprocessed, and significantly different in flavour from commercial honey.
Sidr honey: most valued, sold in small jars.
